The World Around Us

History

Our History curriculum is carefully designed to help students develop a meaningful understanding of the past and its impact on the world they live in today. Delivered through a three-year rolling programme, the curriculum is sequenced to build and revisit knowledge over time, enabling students to strengthen long-term memory, make connections between topics and deepen their historical understanding.

Using the Kapow Primary History scheme as a foundation, the curriculum has been thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of students within our specialist SEND setting. While ensuring full National Curriculum coverage across mixed-age classes, learning is presented through practical, sensory and experiential approaches that support engagement, communication and understanding. High expectations are maintained for all students, with appropriate adaptations made to meet individual communication, sensory, physical and cognitive needs.

Students explore chronology, significant individuals, historical events, civilisations and changes within living memory through a range of engaging learning experiences. Storytelling, role play, artefacts, photographs, visual supports, educational visits and local studies bring history to life and help students make meaningful connections between the past, present and their own experiences.

The curriculum promotes curiosity, enquiry and critical thinking, encouraging students to ask questions, investigate evidence and develop their understanding of how societies, communities and cultures have changed over time. Through studying history, students gain a stronger sense of identity, develop an appreciation of diversity and build cultural capital. These experiences support preparation for adulthood by helping students understand their place within their local community, the wider world and the ongoing story of human development.
