Mastery Approach
At Baskerville School, mathematics is taught through a Mastery approach, ensuring that all students develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of mathematical concepts. We believe that every student can make progress in mathematics when learning is carefully sequenced, appropriately scaffolded and built upon prior knowledge. The mastery approach places emphasis on conceptual understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, enabling students to apply mathematical knowledge confidently in a range of contexts.
To support high-quality teaching and learning, we use the White Rose Maths framework to inform curriculum design, pedagogy and lesson sequencing across all pathways. White Rose provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills, ensuring that concepts are introduced in small, manageable steps and revisited regularly to strengthen understanding and retention. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning, allowing students to develop confidence before moving on to new concepts.
Teaching incorporates a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, alongside explicit modelling, mathematical vocabulary and opportunities for discussion. This supports students in developing their understanding, explaining their thinking and making connections between mathematical ideas. Adaptations are made within each pathway to ensure that learning is accessible, meaningful and ambitious for all students.
Through the combination of a mastery-based curriculum and the White Rose Maths framework, students are supported to develop mathematical independence, resilience and problem-solving skills, preparing them to apply mathematics confidently in everyday life, further education, employment and adulthood.
