Specialist Spaces
One of the most important things about the new building is that it has been designed around specialist SEND education from the very beginning — not adapted or retrofitted, but purpose-built. Every space has been planned with our pupils' needs at the centre.
Classrooms
The school includes a range of specialist classroom environments across both floors, each designed for small group teaching. Severe suite classrooms accommodate up to seven pupils with two members of staff, while larger ICT-rich classrooms and science laboratories support older and more ambulant pupils. Every classroom has its own dedicated quiet breakout space directly off it, giving pupils somewhere to step away and regulate without leaving their learning environment. Classrooms also benefit from large windows to maximise natural light and provide views of the grounds.
Quiet calming spaces
Every classroom in the new school has its own dedicated quiet calming space directly off it, with the exception of the specialist rooms. These small rooms give pupils somewhere to regulate and decompress without leaving their learning environment — an essential feature for a school supporting pupils with complex needs.
Sensory room and soft play
The new school includes a dedicated sensory room and a soft play room, both designed as therapeutic spaces that complement classroom learning. These spaces support pupils' sensory needs in a safe, purpose-built environment.
Therapy rooms
Speech and language therapy rooms are built into the school's design, meaning visiting therapists and our own specialist staff have dedicated, appropriate spaces to work with pupils — rather than having to make do with adapted classrooms or corridors.
Life Skills
A dedicated independent life skills room supports older pupils in developing practical skills for greater independence. The school also includes a food room equipped for cookery and food technology, which plays an important role in life skills learning across year groups.
Sports hall and fitness
The new sports hall is 180 square metres — a full-size indoor PE space designed for a wide range of activities. There is also a separate fitness room for more structured exercise. Both spaces have adjacent changing rooms with showers and accessible facilities.
Music, science, and creative arts
Dedicated music rooms, science laboratories, and a flexible DT and art workshop give pupils access to a full and rich curriculum in spaces that are genuinely fit for purpose. The music rooms are acoustically fitted, the science labs include specialist fixtures, and the art and DT space is designed to flex between different creative activities.
Medical and hygiene facilities
Medical rooms, hygiene rooms with full changing facilities, and a laundry are all built into the school — reflecting the level of personal care many of our pupils need as part of their school day. These spaces are designed with dignity and practicality in mind.
