Recognising Progress
Understanding Each Pupil’s Journey
Recognising progress and planning what comes next
Teachers draw on pupils’ work, observations, curriculum assessment and what pupils can demonstrate independently. This helps build a picture of learning over time and identify the next steps in teaching.
Every pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Progress towards personalised outcomes is considered alongside curriculum learning. For pupils with more complex learning profiles, small-step assessment helps recognise achievements that conventional measures may not capture well.
We are strengthening the consistency of assessment across pathways, including how staff compare their judgements and use evidence to adapt teaching when progress slows.
Meaningful steps forward
Depending on a pupil’s starting point, progress might include:
-
Using a communication strategy to express a preference more independently.
-
Applying reading or number skills in an everyday activity.
-
Completing a familiar task with fewer adult prompts.
-
Using a strategy to manage emotions and rejoin learning.
-
Demonstrating new knowledge or skills towards accreditation.
