Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental Health and Wellbeing at Baskerville School

At Baskerville School, we recognise that positive mental health and emotional wellbeing are fundamental to our students' success and happiness. We understand that young people with autism may face unique mental health challenges, including higher rates of anxiety, depression, and sensory overwhelm. Our comprehensive approach is specifically designed to address these needs through autism-informed support, creating an open culture where every student's voice is heard and valued. Our commitment extends to families, staff, and governors, ensuring mental health is everyone's priority and responsibility.
Our support framework includes universal wellbeing education for all students, teaching emotional literacy, stress management, and self-advocacy skills through autism-appropriate methods. We provide targeted interventions including social anxiety support groups, sensory processing help, individual counselling with autism-trained therapists, and specialised therapeutic services like art and music therapy. Students benefit from daily well-being check-ins, sensory regulation areas throughout the school, predictable routines that build security, and multiple communication channels adapted to different communication styles. Crisis support protocols ensure immediate help is available when students experience meltdowns, shutdowns, or mental health emergencies.
We work in partnership with families and external professionals, including CAMHS, educational psychology services, and community mental health providers, to ensure comprehensive care. Our staff receive specialised training in autism and mental health, trauma-informed practice, and mental health first aid, supported by regular supervision and wellbeing programs. Family support includes regular workshops, 24/7 resources, peer parent networks, and flexible communication accommodating different family needs. We maintain strong connections with local autism charities and community services to provide wrap-around support beyond the school environment.
Our success is measured through regular wellbeing assessments using autism-appropriate tools, academic progress monitoring, and family satisfaction feedback. Students can access support by speaking to trusted staff, using classroom wellbeing systems, or visiting our calm spaces, while families can contact class teachers, our Family Liaison Officer, or use our emergency support systems. We believe every student deserves to feel safe, understood, and supported in their mental health journey, and we are committed to walking alongside our families every step of the way, celebrating progress and ensuring everyone has the tools they need to thrive.
